Question 2

How do I properly maintain an epoxy floor coating in a commercial or industrial facility?

Accepted Answer

To properly maintain an epoxy floor coating: perform daily dust mopping or auto-scrubbing to remove abrasive particles; wet mop weekly using a pH-neutral cleaner; promptly clean up chemical spills to prevent surface degradation; avoid harsh acids, bleach, or steel wool pads, as these can erode the topcoat; and plan for periodic re-coating of high-traffic wear zones every 3 to 5 years depending on usage. T.W. Hicks also offers a dedicated Floor Maintenance Program designed to extend the service life of these systems.

Question 3

What is gypsum concrete underlayment (Gypcrete), and when should it be used?

Accepted Answer

Gypsum concrete underlayment, commonly known as Gypcrete, is a lightweight, pourable floor underlayment composed of gypsum, sand, and water. It is engineered to provide superior sound control, fire resistance, and a smooth, level surface ideal for finished flooring applications. It is the preferred choice for elevated wood-frame construction and large-scale renovation projects, particularly in multifamily residential buildings, hotels, healthcare facilities, and commercial construction projects that require building code compliance for sound and fire ratings. It cures faster than traditional concrete, is significantly lighter, and creates a flatter substrate.

Question 4

What is the difference between polish and seal concrete versus an epoxy floor coating?

Accepted Answer

Both polish and seal concrete and epoxy floor coatings are durable, high-performance flooring solutions, but they serve different purposes. Polished and sealed concrete works by grinding and densifying the existing concrete slab to achieve a sleek, reflective finish, then sealing it for stain and wear resistance, requiring no additional coating layer and offering a low-maintenance, natural look. Epoxy floor coatings apply a polymer resin system over the concrete surface, offering a thicker, more chemical-resistant barrier with options for slip resistance, anti-microbial properties, and custom colors or broadcast designs.

Question 5

What industries does T.W. Hicks serve with its industrial flooring services?

Accepted Answer

T.W. Hicks delivers industrial flooring services across a diverse range of industries throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, and Kansas. Our clients include food and beverage processing plants, aviation hangars, pharmaceutical and cleanroom facilities, manufacturing and distribution centers, automotive dealerships and service bays, animal care facilities, multifamily housing developments, hospitality venues, government, healthcare, and stadiums. Our team of specialists brings industry-specific expertise to every project, ensuring compliance, safety, and long-term durability.

Question 6

How long does gypsum concrete underlayment take to install and cure?

Accepted Answer

Gypsum concrete underlayment typically reaches light foot-traffic readiness within a few hours after installation, depending on ambient conditions like temperature and humidity. Drying time before installing finished flooring, such as tile, carpet, or hardwood, varies based on product thickness, temperature, humidity, and airflow. Finished flooring should only be installed once the underlayment has reached the moisture levels required by the flooring manufacturer, verified through on-site moisture testing.
