When United Plastics Group acquired the adjacent building to their current manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, it was important to find a contractor that could quickly meet the critical needs of the organization, without compromising quality.

Like many other manufacturing facilities, United Plastics Group needed a new floor system that would be aesthetically pleasing to outside visitors, but also easy to clean. Some of the key components requested were good light reflectivity, chemical resistance, and non-skid characteristics.

Flooring materials and system used:
Mechanically removed the existing coatings and profile the existing concrete substrate to a CSP-4 profile.
Verdefloor SC: Self-leveling, urethane mortar applied to recommended coverage rates and immediately broadcast to rejection with 30/40 mesh, washed silica sand.
Verdecoat HPE: High performance epoxy grout coat, pigmented light gray was applied as a grout coat.
Verdeseal HTU: High traffic urethane, pigmented light gray was applied as the finish coat.
The United Plastics Group 4,550 square foot building wasn’t cut and dry. Half of the building was bare concrete and the other half had an old coating system on it that required removal before work could begin.
To accomplish UPG’s goals, T.W. Hicks, Inc. sent long-time employee and equipment operator, Austin, a day early with the task of carefully removing the old flooring system. Once the old floor was removed, the installation team cleaned, routed, and filled all divots and cracks using thixotropic epoxy.
Following the repairs, the crew sanded the areas smooth, and detailed the floor. They then applied Verdia’s Verdefloor SC - a self-leveling, slurry broadcast, urethane mortar system - at 1/16” thick. To obtain an even texture with non-skid characteristics, the floor was immediately broadcast to rejection with 30/40 mesh washed silica sand.
Finally, the team applied an epoxy grout coat and finished with a high wear urethane coating to give the floor the light reflectivity, non-skid characteristics, and chemical resistance that UPG was looking for.
